Our Setting

Our Setting

Scalloway Preschool is an independent provider who offers funded places to eligible preschool children in partnership with Shetland Island Council Children Services. The funded place for your child is available within our setting until their entry into Primary 1. We have established successful arrangements with the primary school to ensure smooth and effective transition from early years provision into formal education .

We deliver 600 hundred hours year entitlement through 5 sessions a week between 9.00 am and 12.10 pm. Scalloway Preschool offers free flexible drop off between 8.45 am and 9 am.  We are open approximately 40 weeks a year, during school term times. Your child funded place will begin following his/her third birthday. In some circumstances, the funded place becomes available prior to that. As well as government funded placements, Scalloway preschool offers vacant places which are subject to the parental fees. The minimum age to start attendance is 2,5 years old.

Please, contact for more information on available funding and other costs.

Scalloway Preschool is a limited company with charitable status which is governed by the board of independent directors.  Being an integral part of the local community since 1960s Scalloway Preschool (formerly playgroup) established a reputation for offering excellent care and educational provision while working in partnership will many local groups like Hame fae Hame, local primary school, Youth Centre, other local clubs and individuals.

The Location and Space

Scalloway Preschool is based within Scalloway Primary school campus. Our recently renovated premises consist of a large classroom/playroom and free flow play area. The adjacent outdoor area is spacious, sheltered and secure. The setting can be accessed via out outdoor area from the main road or via primary school main entrance. The ample car parking is available at both school and swimming pool car parks. We have access to the school Gym hall and music room for our weekly timetabled activities. The toilets and separate changing room are located within the preschool own premises.

Our outdoor area has been completed and ready since October 2017.  A couple of years of hard work; fundraising, grant applications, equipment research and construction has produced a wonderful outdoor space with endless opportunities to have fun, learn and play outside. Huge thanks to our directors for making our case and securing grants from Scottish Rural Development Programme, Awards for All/National lottery, Tesco Bags of Help. We are also grateful for generous donations from Grieg Sea Food, Scalloway Community Council and Scalloway Stars in their Eyes fundraiser. Big thanks to all our families for their relentless fundraising in the last couple of years – even with all the grants and donations we still needed to use our own finances to complete the project. In future, there will be an addition of wall murals, seasonal plants and some other finishing touches. We will keep you updated!

Healthy snacks, milk or water are provided each session. The weekly menu is planned with the input from children. The fresh produce is purchased from the local supermarket and village shop.
